KAKOTUPARAMBU

KAKOTUPARAMBU

Geographical Location: Kakotuparambu is a junction place in Nalkeri Village, Virajpet taluk, Kodagu District. This place is about 8 KM to the north of Virajpet on the Virajpet – Madikeri Road. Madikeri is about 24 KM from Kakotuparambu. The Cauvery River flows at Bethri on the border of the Nalkeri village at about 3 KM from this place.
Nalkeri village is comprised of 4 hamlets - they are: Mugooru, Thonooru, Pandimadu and Hemmadu. Kakotuparambu is at the meeting place of Mugooru and Thonooru.

Importance of the Place: Kakotuparambu derives its name from the Sri Kalabhairava Temple (Kakotu in local language means Kalabhairava) and the adjoining Parambu i.e. grassy hillock. This place is famous for the annual festival of the Sri Kalabhairava, which is being celebrated in the month of December every year. This place has developed into the Village Head Quarters with Gram Panchayath Office, Primary and Higher Secondary Schools, Co-op Bank, Grain Bank, a branch of Vijaya Bank, Telephone Exchange, Rural Health Center, Veterinary Clinic, Coorg Coffee Growers Coop Society, shops and rice hulling mill etc.
Kakotuparambu is famous for the marriage ‘match making’. The three-day annual festival of the deity makes an ideal place for the young persons to see each other.
The place is famous among the sports persons also. The Kodava families of the district have annual Hockey Tournament among each other’s and the cup is known by their family name. The local Mandetira family had conducted the Hockey Tournament in 2007.
The Primary School at Kakotuparambu is more than a Century Old.

The Temple and the festival: I would like to narrate a story of the temple.
Story: Once upon a time Kalabhairava and Chamundi were passing through this place and they were very thirsty and tired. Chamundi asked Kalabhairava to look for any house where they can quench their thirst and take rest. Kalabhairava set out in search. Chamundi was waiting for his return at the same place. In the mean time Kalabhairava had reached a Brahmin’s house and was treated well there. He was so impressed by the treatment that he forgot Chamundi and had his food and rest. On realizing his mistake he went back to find Chamundi very furious. She in a fit of anger chased him to punish for the negligence. Chamundi Terey and the Utsava moorthy of Kalabhairava annually enact the chasing and running respectively during the annual festival.
The temple complex consists of the Temple of Kalabhairava and the Temple for Mandhaka – Parvathi (some say Mandhaka is the sister Akkamma of Lord Kalabhairava). The two are separated by the place of Martha Terey under the Jackfruit tree. The annual festival falls on Dhanurshankramana Day every year, i.e. between 14th and 16th of December.
